North 5th Street is getting overhaul Phase one begins Sunday

May 10, 2018

The 5th Street Improvements Project will soon be underway and the community will see a full reconstruction from Oregon Avenue north to A Street.

So what can you expect?

Because of Creswell's 4th of July Celebration, Public Works Director Cliff Bellew said that there will be two phases of construction.

The first phase will run this Sunday, May 13 through June 8, including some underground, in-street work from May 19 to June 8.

At Holt Park, trees on the east side of North 5th Street will be removed to widen the road and create space for a new sidewalk, Bellew said. New trees will be planted to replace those removed.

"The road will be widened to match 5th Street north of A Street, along with new curb, gutter and sidewalk on both sides of the street," Bellew said. There will also be some additional on-street parking added on the northern end of the block, he said.

"It is unfortunate that Holt Park will not be in its full glory for this year's (4th of July Celebration) event but it is in the best interest of the community and the long-range success of the project to undertake this work ahead of the event," City Administrator Michelle Amberg said. She said she was assured that the road will be patched and the park will be ready for use on the 4th of July for the city's holiday festivities.

The second phase will begin the second week of July and will be completed by Oct. 12, Bellew said. Construction will also consist of public utilities relocations and upgrades, including a new water main and services, new sewer main and laterals, and new storm piping.

The City of Creswell received four proposals for the 5th Street Improvements Project. Creswell City Council voted to award the contract to the lowest bidder, Delta Construction Company, in the amount of $637,190. The project will carry over into the 2018-19 fiscal year as the utility relocation has held up the project, City Finance Director Jim Piper stated.
