Only 13 boys attended, down 20 to 30 players from previous summers, but the low turnout didn't diminish the learning and fun as Creswell High School boys' basketball head coach Rich Milne hosted a boys' basketball camp from June 23 through June 25 at Creswell High School.

‘Faith and Futbol' combine at Christian soccer camp
An innovative soccer-oriented version of Vacation Bible School drew nearly 100 children to a Faith and Futbol Camp hosted by Creswell Church of the Nazarene and held at Creswell Faith Center every evening from June 14 through June 18.

Zach Maillard, a senior, was named to the PacWest Second Team as a pitcher, while sophomore Matt Gerlach was named to the Second Team as an infielder.

"He ran a perfect race where he stayed in second place for the first lap, and when he made his move for the lead, Austin Collins from Colton was able to hold him off for the final 300 meters," Nickelson said, adding of the pair of top finishers, "They were side by side for almost the entire lap."

"I told the guys, I'm as competitive a person as you're going to find, but I'm realistic too," said Jones. "I made up my mind early on that I was not going to stress about wins and losses; the goal this year was to get better at baseball, and I felt like we did that."

Five Creswell High School track athletes qualified for state after placing first or second in their events during the OSAA 3A District 3/PacWest District Championships, held under sunny skies with temperatures in the 70s on May 14 and 15 at Sprague High School in Salem.

The Creswell Soccer Club's three teams — Tiger Black, Tiger Gold and Tiger Green — wrapped up their spring season on Saturday with a celebration that included games, a barbecue and awards. Equestrians falter but have fun at state
The Oregon High School Equestrian Teams (OHSET) South Valley District in which the Creswell High School equestrian team competes performed well overall during the 2010 OHSET State Championships, held May 12 through May 16 at the Jackson County Fairgrounds in Central Point, but Creswell athletes did not fare as well, according to Creswell head coach Lisa Hurlburt.

After finishing third at state as a team and having their top individual golfer, Aleks Gabrio, finish second in the individual standings in 2009, the Creswell Bulldogs boys' golf team ended their 2010 season without earning berths to state as a team or for any of their individual golfers.

"It was a really competitive ballgame; I don't think them coming into our league is going to be a big scare for us, but they're still going to be a tough battle," Worsham said.

Lady Dawgs eye outside shot at playoffs
If the Creswell High School Lady Dawgs are to make league playoffs for the second consecutive year, it will be an uphill scramble during the final week of PacWest regular season softball play. For the second time this season, on May 7 the Harrisburg Eagles shut out with a score of 0-10 the Lady Dawgs, who are now 4-6 and drop into fifth place in PacWest Conference standings.

Raleigh Shepler golfed a 121 to tie for 13th place and Shelley Hurlburt golfed a 125 to tie for 15th as Creswell High School's two individual girls' varsity golfers competed in the Sisters High Girls' Invitational Tournament.

Clad in colorful tights, numbered team tanks and too-short shorts, Mr. Bulldog contestants Zach Maillard, Robert Shepler, Chris Kounovsky, Paco Rodriguez and Cody Klohn battled district staffers Stan Mercer, Rich Milne, Monty Hull, Scott Worsham, Aaron Keo, Sean Ferrarese and Todd Grassman for all-in-good-fun and for-a-good-cause bragging rights.

Rain, wind hinder golfers at coast tourney
Bad weather, rules and scoring difficulties, the challenges of playing on a links-style golf course, and the absence of two of Creswell's regular varsity players all hampered the Bulldogs, Newell indicated. "The weather turned very windy and wet, and it was the most difficult course the kids could play under poor weather conditions," Newell said. "It was actually bad for all the teams, especially those not used to playing on links-style golf course.

Baseball for good cause eases rough week
"Defensively, the kids came back and played really well; all 10 of Pleasant Hill's runs were earned," Worsham praised, noting that the Dawgs committed just one error. "It's too bad we couldn't get our bats going on offense; that's one thing we're going to keep working on this week.

The varsity girls competed at the Marist Girls' Invitational, held at Tokatee Golf Club in Blue River on April 5, and again during the nine-hole Cottage Grove Girls' Invitational at Middlefield Golf Course in Cottage Grove on April 7.

A fourth-place team finish and Christopher Leiken's tie for first place during the Elmira Invitational highlighted a rainy week for the CHS boys' golf team, after the Creswell Invitational tournament they were to host at Emerald Valley Golf Course on March 29 was rained out.

Dawgs 2-2 after busy preseason week
Overall, "I was pretty pleased with how we played this week," said Worsham, whose team will play South Eugene's JV at Civic Stadium at noon on March 27 for their only game this week.

Aside from a few dropped balls in the outfield, the Lady Dawgs also played efficient defense. "We were making the plays and made good throws," Coach Taylor said.

First-meet finishes bode well for track team
"If this is an indication of things [to come], we could be in for a real good season," Nickelson said. Highlighting the meet for Creswell were wins by Breanna Schmidt in the long jump, with a leap of 15'9.25", and Corbin Helt in the 3000 meters, with a time of 9:59.49.

Golfers open season at Tokatee, Oakway
The Dawgs, who won the tournament last year, shot a combined 423 to finish fourth, behind tournament winner McKenzie, which shot a 350, Glide, which shot a 384, and Oakridge, which shot a 388.

Cow events kind to CHS equestrian team
The CHS team penning team of Shelley Hurlburt, Becca Hober and Samantha Pifferini placed second in that event after successfully penning cows during all three of their runs.

CMS boys build for future on-court success
"What we really worked on was transition offense, and that worked really well; the kids ran it really well without turnovers," Apo said, adding that readiness for high school ball is "kind of what the whole thing is about" at the middle school level.

CMS girls learn basics, transition basketball
"One of my big things was getting [my players] into transition basketball: getting up the floor as quick as possible and getting easy baskets and, if that doesn't work, then setting up your half-court offense," reported Ron Connelly, the girls' eighth-grade coach.

JV boys' success bodes well for future
"This was a really high-energy group of guys, good at pushing the ball up the floor and also playing smart basketball," said JV coach Joey Jackson, a 2004 CHS graduate who was a member of that year's state championship Bulldog team.

Nelson wrestles tough at state
Creswell junior Cole Nelson competed well as Creswell High School wrestling team's only representative at the 3A State Wrestling Championships, which were held on Feb. 26-28 at Portland's Memorial Coliseum.

When the 2009-2010 girls' basketball PacWest All-League teams were announced last week, three Creswell Lady Dawgs had been tapped to receive All-League honors. Chandler Gabrio, a junior post, was named to the First Team. Junior point guard Jamie McMahon was named to the Second Team, while junior guard/wing Breanna Schmidt received Honorable Mention.

At Gold Beach, where Creswell wrestled against Bandon as well as host Gold Beach, "The boys did really well in their [individual] matchups and as a team," reported a very pleased Stacey Hanson, head coach of the Bulldogs.

"They never gave up; they battled, they kept pushing," said Apo, who along with his team viewed the challenge of playing against a top team as "a definite plus, regardless of what the score was."

Big Dawgs end season at District
The inaugural season for local middle-school-age wrestlers competing in the South Valley League wrapped up when fifth- through eighth-graders who are members of Creswell's Big Dawg youth wrestling club competed at the District Tournament, held on Jan. 30.

Dawgs down, not out after loss to Lions
The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 3-6 in league play. But with six of eight teams in the PacWest this season (excepting undefeated Santiam Christian and winless Waldport) "pretty evenly matched, athletically," Milne cautioned not to count his team out of the playoff hunt.

All but one match was decided by pin, but unfortunately most of those did not go in Creswell's favor when Creswell's Big Dawg youth wrestling club hosted Lowell for a South Valley League dual meet at Creswell Middle School on Jan. 14.

"I am very proud of my team because judges want to see a flawless routine, so we go over the routine over and over, which is very taxing on the body because of all the stunting, tumbling and jumping," noted Creswell head cheerleading coach Tangie Clark.

Bulldog wrestlers battled to a 36-24 league win over Coquille before dropping a close non-league match to Sutherlin during a dual meet hosted by North Bend on Jan. 16.

"Even though we didn't have anyone to compete against my team did very well considering we re-tweaked everything after losing our main flyer, Amanda Olson," Clark said.

The Creswell Bulldogs dropped to 1-2 in PacWest Conference play after a disappointing 27-54 road loss to Harrisburg in a tough, physical contest on Jan. 8.

"I've got to credit the girls for executing the game plan," Apo said, praising his players' response to team goals that included extending the defense to guard the Eagles' outside shooters and improving rebounding.

Big Dawgs dominate first home dual of season
"All wrestlers looked great and totally dominated our first home meet of the season," Dunn said. "The kids were very aggressive and never gave in. I was extremely proud of all of them."

Junior post Chandler Gabrio had 13 points and 14 rebounds and Breanna Schmidt added 10 points to lead Creswell past the host Toledo Boomers, 44-41, in a nailbiter on Dec. 15.

"We put together two quarters of fantastic basketball," Milne said. "If we can execute for four quarters like we did the first two against Junction City, we could beat [projected PacWest Conference leader] Santiam Christian."

In their third season, Big Dawgs add middle school team
"We still don't have a lot of experience, but we're making up for it with being really aggressive," Dunn said. And perhaps most importantly, he added, "We're having a lot of fun."

Rookie wrestlers gain experience at Cottage Grove
"These are the least experienced guys I have on the team, but they're making good progress," Hanson said. "Overall, I am pleased with these young guys and their advancements."

Two big wins boost Lady Dawgs to 4-1
Creswell got 25 points from Chandler Gabrio and 14 from point guard Jamie McMahon in defeating host Sweet Home, 61-41, on Dec. 8, and on Dec. 10 the Lady Dawgs posted a 40-30 win over the host Junction City Tigers.

Dawgs off to 1-1 start in preseason
"Zach [Mallard] had a great game," said first-year head coach Rich Milne who, after three years as an assistant coach, recorded his first varsity win along with his young squad. "He was just a phenomenal leader; he kind of took the game over and the guys rallied around that."

Lady Dawgs off and running at 2-1
First-year head coach Makana Apo praised his team's execution of their new offense, which netted Creswell a number of uncontested lay-ins against both teams. "We're pushing the transition game really hard, and I was extremely pleased with our transition game," Apo said, while noting that he and his players were "not as comfortable" with their defense during those first two games.

Three place at first wrestling tourney
A young Creswell Bulldogs wrestling team placed three team members, including two first-year wrestlers, during their first wrestling tournament of the season, hosted by the Harrisburg Eagles on Dec. 4.

Cheer stunt team takes fifth at All-State
The CHS stunt group, comprised of flyer Amanda Olson and bases Drew Ralston, Kayla Stram, Ashley Milenewicz and Camille Heltman, placed fifth out of 10 teams in their division at All-State.

JV football gains skills, varsity readiness
Despite finishing with a 2-7 record, Creswell High School's junior varsity football team made offensive and defensive strides and gained skills that will benefit them next year, said JV football coach Scott Worsham.

"This group of girls has been together for a while; they work well together and get along as a team, and that makes it a lot more fun and they do better," said JV1 coach Alicia Robbs, who also coached four of this season's JV1 players when they were on JV2.

Tigers wrap winning football season
"It was our best season so far out of the three years that Robert [Bolanos] and I have coached, said CMS head coach Joe Orick. Orick acts as offensive coordinator for both the seventh- and the eighth-grade teams, while Bolanos serves as defensive coordinator.

Dawgs bring home state's sixth-place trophy
After dropping their quarterfinals match the Lady Dawgs rebounded to win their consolation semifinals game before falling to Sheridan in the consolation finals to take sixth place during the OSAA 3A State Volleyball Championships, held Nov. 13 and 14 at Lane Community College.

Helt all-state, three runners all-district
Creswell placed three cross country runners on the All-District Team for Special District 3, and one of those runners, sophomore Corbin Helt, made the 2009 3A/2A/1A boys' All-State Team as well. Helt, who repeated as individual District 3 champion on Oct. 30 and placed second at state on Nov. 7, was also named the District 3 boys' Runner of the Year.

Six Dawgs named boys' soccer all-stars
Johnny Morales, the sophomore goalkeeper for the Creswell boys' soccer team, received Goalkeeper of the Year honors and five of his teammates were also recently named to Special District 3 All-League teams for 2009.

Six named to girls' soccer all-league teams
Creswell's sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Moore was named Goalkeeper of the Year and six of her teammates were also named to girls' soccer All-League teams when the 2009 all-stars for Special District 5 were announced recently.

Soccer season ends with state playoff loss
For the third consecutive year, the Creswell boys' soccer team's OSAA 3A/2A/1A state playoff run ended in the first round after a heartbreaking 0-1 home loss to Delphian on Nov. 10.

The Bulldog boys will now turn their attention toward preparing for this Saturday's OSAA State 3A/2A/1A championships, to be held at Lane Community College beginning at 10 a.m. The Bulldogs will run at 10:35 a.m. Admission to the meet is $8 for adults and $5 for students.

Sarah Ellison was crowned homecoming queen during a halftime ceremony that saw members of the homecoming court, escorted by their fathers or other male relatives or family friends, arrive in a procession of vintage cars. Senior Matt Billings had been named homecoming king earlier in the day.

"We almost had it; I could taste it," lamented Creswell head coach Brandi Wittenborn, describing the loss as "absolutely heartbreaking, devastating," for herself and her players.

UVC loss ends Dawgs' win streak at 11
"It was a great game; it was just head-to-head, a tough battle," said Creswell head coach Kieran Walsh. "It's quite possible that third game in five days hurt us; we were not rested," Walsh observed before adding philosophically, "The bottom line is that on any given day, any given team can be beaten. Better it happen now than in the first games of the state playoffs."

9-0 Dawgs hand St. Mary's first-ever home loss
"It's the first time anybody's ever beaten them at their house, and we were the team to do it," related a jubilant Thomas Carroll, Creswell's assistant coach under head coach Kieran Walsh.

Lady Dawgs split week with second loss to SC
"We played them better than we played them the first time, but we missed a lot of key serves and they're a really strong serving team; it's hard to get much offense going when you're having trouble passing their serves," said Creswell head coach Anna Baltrusch.

Dawgs play tough against league leader SC
"We played one of the better teams in the state and we played 'em tough—tougher than I'm sure they expected us to," said Creswell head coach Paul Goldspink.

Dawgs record PRs at Regis, host Fun Run
"It was a great day with plenty of sun and temperatures in the mid-60s," said Creswell head coach David Nickelson, who described the flat course with two short uphill portions as "generally a fast course with plenty of room to pass."

Dawgs rescue win, remain undefeated
The Pilots, a team that Creswell head coach Kieran Walsh described as "much improved; the best team they've had in the past several years," battled the sixth-ranked Bulldogs to a 1-1 first-half stalemate, and with time running out it seemed the game might end in a tie. But then Olvera, a senior midfielder, found an opening and scored on a kick from about 20 yards out to snatch victory for his team.

Dawgs win JC tourney, two league games
Claiming the championship during the Junction City Tournament on Oct. 10 iced a week that included league victories over Toledo and Regis that kept the Creswell Lady Dawgs in sole possession of second place in the PacWest volleyball standings, a game behind league leader Santiam Christian.

Girls' soccer team battles Elmira to stalemate
Beswick was named Creswell's player of the game, but Wittenborn noted that "all of the girls, as a team, rose to the occasion. They outplayed and outhustled their opponent; unfortunately it just didn't work out for us [to get the win]."

Dawgs running well after second grueling week
Under sunny skies and with temperatures in the mid-60s Helt completed the 5K course, which takes runners on two big loops—one flat and one up the face of Dorena Dam and winding through forested trails—in 16:55.

Dawgs stun Rams with first-ever PacWest loss
Making the decisive 33-12 victory over the also young and rebuilding Rams even sweeter was that it was the Bulldogs' first win of the season. "Obviously the kids were happy," said Creswell head coach Paul Goldspink.

"The girls had played so hard all day, and they were getting tired," Baltrusch said. "It was a good match, but we could have played much better in that game than we did."

Bautista hat trick helps Dawgs take district lead
Carlos Bautista scored a hat trick to lift Creswell past Rogue River on the road, 4-1, on Sept. 22 and added another goal as the Bulldogs downed Hosanna Christian Academy, 3-1, at home on Sept. 26.

Lady Bulldog soccer still seeking first win
Despite suffering shutouts to Cottage Grove, 0-8, on Sept. 22 and Junction City, 0-9, on Sept. 24, Creswell head coach Brandi Wittenborn encouraged her girls' soccer team to take pride in their defensive efforts during both games.

After a hard-fought first half against the Toledo Boomers, the Creswell Bulldogs were down by just a touchdown, 0-8, at halftime, but Toledo took control in the third quarter as the visiting Boomers muscled out a 48-13 victory over the Bulldogs on Sept. 25.

Tough week gives trial run of state, district courses
"It was beneficial for the team to compete at a meet of this magnitude and to be able to compete at the state championship site," Nickelson said. "We try to go to meets that have challenging courses and top competition."

In addition to this week's regular season games, the Lady Dawgs are working hard to prepare for the Oct. 3 Santiam Christian Tournament, at which almost all of the top 10 3A teams in the state are expected to compete.

"The girls are all just so proud of the facility that we have now; it's really as nice as what a lot of college teams practice in," Riddle said after the inaugural game.

Just days after the Creswell High School baseball team secured a state playoffs spot with a come-from-behind victory, the softball team produced a stunner of their own, rallying from a 0-5 deficit to down Harrisburg, 9-5, during their league playoff game to advance to state for the first time in 30 years.

The Creswell girls' basketball team overcame an inconsistent season that saw them finishing fifth in PacWest standings to down fourth-place Regis during league playoffs, earning the PacWest's fourth seed and advancing by the skin of their teeth to the state playoffs for the third straight year.
